THE FAROES

There are few places as wild and unspoilt as the Faroes - one of the least known corners of Europe. This group of eighteen islands is in the middle of the North Atlantic, halfway between Scotland and Iceland. The ocean dominates the Faroese landscape with its 700 miles of coastline; at no time are you more than 3 miles from the sea. Sheer black cliffs and sea stacks, rugged mountains and fjords contrast with picturesque villages of colourful houses, hay fields and drifts of golden marsh marigolds.
The landscape is built up in layers that have sunk on one side and been raised on the other. The cliffs are the edges of these great layers of basalt, which were deposited by the volcanoes of the ocean bed in the Tertiary period. The total population is 45,000 of whom 16,000 live in the capital of Tórshavn. Outside of Tórshavn are small villages with colourfully painted buildings and people going about their daily life as they have done for generations.
We are pleased to be one of the first companies to have recognised the potential for exciting walking holidays in the Faroes. On our trips over the last few years the groups have enjoyed the awe-inspiring scenery, the unique alpine flora, the prolific bird life and the lack of commercialisation. The summer sun sets late at this latitude of 62º North, enabling us to extend our activities late into the evening. The sounds of drumming snipe, and the calls of whimbrel and Arctic Skuas often accompany our walks.

Our boat trip below the 1000-foot sea cliffs at Vestmanna is an amazing experience; the sea and the cliffs teem with puffins, gannets, guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes. Cold Arctic currents merge with the warm Gulf Stream in these waters, resulting in a rich food environment for the nesting birds.

Grade: The emphasis is on exploring the islands and getting to know their history and landscape, as well as walking. Gradients are generally easy and much of the walking is on grassland or rough tracks. We walk for up to 10 miles per day, with a maximum of 1500 feet of ascent. Some days are much easier than others, with only 3 or 4 hours walking.
Dates: We are offering departures on 14 June and 2 August 2004. Please email us if you are interested.
