This holiday aims to showcase the very best that Skye has to offer. Over the week we will experience the varied and diverse nature of the scenery while enjoying the best local food Skye has to offer.
We will explore the strange basalt pinnacles and ridges of Storr and the Quiraing, with sweeping views towards the Torridon mountains. The Cuillins have been drawing mountaineers for over a 100 years. We take the boat into Loch Scavaig which is arguably the classic way into the Cuillins offering some of the finest views in Scotland.
Scotland's dark history of the Highland Clearances is only too evident as we walk to the deserted villages of Boreraig and Suisnish which provide real contrast against the stark backdrop of the Cuillin.
Skye's coastline presents us with some of the most dramatic and rugged scenery in the country and no visit is complete without a walk to the sea stacks of Macloed's Maidens and Idrigill Point.
Day 1 – Skye
Your North-West Frontiers guide collects you from Inverness Railway Station at 13.30. We then drive along the shores of Loch Ness and through beautiful Glen Shiel to the Isle of Skye. On the way we will stop at the famous Eilean Donan Castle, which was originally built around 1220.
Day 2 – The Quiraing
The Quiraing provides a memorable days’ walking, discovering this unusual landscape. With features like the Prison, the Needle and the Table there is much exploration to be done. Our route will take us onto the north end of the Trotternish ridge providing exceptional views of the whole ridge and across to the Outer Hebrides.
Day 3 – Glenbrittle (Cuillin)
After breakfast we begin our day's walk in the rugged Cuillin Mountains. Some of the great options for today include a hike from Glenbrittle to Coire Lagan - this challenging walk follows a beautiful glacier-carved cirque. Alternatively (leader’s discretion) we may head towards Bruach Na Frithe or "slope of the deer forest". Here we are treated to amazing views of Ben Nevis to the east, and the Outer Hebrides to the west.
Day 4 – Loch Coriusk to Sligachan (weather permitting)
Taking a short boat ride from the pretty village of Elgol we head into Loch Scavaig, which is undoubtedly the best way to view the grandeur of the Cuillin and one of the many highlights of the week. We start our walk from the mouth of the River Coruisk and take a path that heads back to Sligachan under the shadow of the jagged outline of the Cuillin. The Sligachan Hotel is steeped in the history of Scottish mountaineering and a well-earned drink awaits.
Day 5 – Trotternish & Storr
Driving north from Portree we view the dark basalt cliffs of The Storr and the pinnacles of the Old Man and the Needle perched below. Our walk climbs into the area known as the Sanctuary which provides wonderful exploration of this unique area. If group-fitness allows we continue our climb to the summit of the Storr with the views extending across to the Torridon hills.
Day 6 – Suisnish & Boreraig
Today we walk to the deserted villages of Suisnish and Boreraig. These two villages are a stark reminder of the effects the Highland clearances had on the fabric of the Scottish landscape. Our route loops around the coast providing wonderful views to the Small Isles and visits the remains of the old marble quarries in this area.
Day 7 – Inverness
After breakfast we will return to Inverness. The drive takes about 2.5 hours and we will be back at Inverness station around 12.00. This is in time to catch trains going south to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
