| | | | Sutherland’s far northern landscape is wild, rough, and seriously remote. In other words, it provides great potential for walking. Round-shouldered Ben Hope, Scotland’s most northerly Munro, and the sprawling mass that is Ben Klibreck rise out of the barren peat moors; the land steeped in poignant memories of the Highland Clearances which took place here during the first half of the 19th century. Ben Loyal, with its very distinctive ridge and great, granite torso, stands stark and grand above the pretty village of Tongue, its impressive profile earning it the title ‘Queen of Scottish Mountains’. For an easier day we can either explore one of the lesser hills, or walk the beautiful, cliff-edged coastline of Whiten Head above Loch Eriboll - a magnificent natural harbour and the only mainland breeding ground of the Atlantic grey seal. Indented by deep geos or bays, the steep, heather-topped cliffs here form a natural nesting place for numerous varieties of seabirds. Whiten Head, named Hvitr (‘white headland’) by the Norsemen - unwelcome occupiers of this coast for more than four centuries - marks the north-western corner of the Moine Thrust zone, one of the Highlands’ most significant geological features. - This is one of our easier Intermediate grade holidays, where we walk mainly on paths -Accommodation Tongue Hotel was build by the Duke of Sutherland as a hunting lodge in the late 19th century. Now a warm, comfortable, four-star hotel, the original furniture remains giving the spacious bedrooms special character. All rooms have en suite facilities. The hotel serves a table d’hôte menu and excellent bar meals. A real treat to stay here! Walking Grade A mixture of mountain walks with 1500 to 3000 feet (450-900 m) of ascent and long low-level walks of up to 15 miles (24 km). We will walk for 6 to 7 hours a day at a steady pace but with plenty of view stops. There are few paths and the way is often over rough ground. Requires good fitness, previous hill walking experience is an advantage. |
