During this week we focus on the beautiful coastline between Mallaig and Arisaig. Sheltered bays and anchorages pepper the coast here, and our base is close to Morar’s famous white, silica-sand beach that featured in the films Rob Roy and Highlander. We enjoy stunning mountain views towards the opposite shore as we walk inland along the north bank of Loch Morar - which, plunging to a depth of 300m, is Scotland’s deepest freshwater loch. We follow the coast south through the magical Beasdale woods to Loch Nan Uamh and the hidden cleft that once served as Bonnie Prince Charlie’s cave.

The small island of Eigg lies about five miles off the mainland; this peaceful, unspoilt island is close enough to visit on a day trip and we regularly see dolphins and porpoises on the crossings. Eigg’s distinctive shape lives up to the Gaelic eag, meaning a notch, with An Sgurr and An Cruachan rising either side of a deep groove. From every angle the island - part-owned by its residents since 1997 - is dominated by An Sgurr, which at 400m above sea level is the largest residual mass of columnar pitchstone lava in Britain.

Muck is the smallest and most southerly of the Small Isles; its name originates from the Gaelic muc mara - meaning sea pig or porpoise. It is a pretty little green island with rocky seal-strewn skerries on the north side and lovely sandy beaches. We will climb the little bumb Beinn Airein, from where we can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view to the surrounding islands, before the ferry takes us back to the mainland.

Walking Grade
The emphasis is on a leisurely pace with time to observe and interpret the area, its history and wildlife. We usually spend 5 to 6 hours walking up to 8 - 10 miles (12 -16 km). Gradients are generally easy and much of the walking is on paths, although these can be rough in places. Basic fitness required.
