| | | | There are few places as wild and unspoilt as the Faroes - one of the least explored corners of Europe. This far-flung group of 18 islands lies in the middle of the North Atlantic, halfway between Scotland and Iceland. The ocean dominates the Faroese landscape with its 700 miles of coastline; at no time are you more than three miles from the sea. Sheer black cliffs and sea stacks, rugged mountains and fjords contrast with picturesque villages of colourful houses, hay fields and drifts of golden marsh marigolds.
The landscape is built up in layers that have sunk on one side and been raised on the other. The cliffs are the edges of these great layers of basalt, which were deposited by the volcanoes of the ocean bed in the Tertiary period. The total population is 45,000 of whom 16,000 live in the capital of Tórshavn. Outside of Tórshavn are small villages with colourfully painted houses and people going about their daily life as they have done for generations.
During this holiday we cover a great diverse area, including the islands of Sandoy in the south, Mykines in the west and Kalsoy in the far north. We will also stay two nights in Tórshavn. You will enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery, the unique alpine flora, the prolific bird life and the lack of commercialisation. The summer sun sets late at this latitude of 62º North, enabling us to extend our activities late into the evening.Trip Leader The holiday will be lead by NWF leader Angela Gillespie as well as local guides. Accommodation We will stay in the some of the best hotel accommodations available. One night Airport Hotel, 2 nights in Gjogv, 2 nights in Klaksvik and finally two nights in Torshavn. Dinners will be arranged at your accommodation or at small local restaurants. Walking Grade Moderate PLUS:
The emphasis is on exploring the islands and getting to know their history and landscape. The daily walking times vary between 2 – 5 hours a day, but are often flexible and weather dependent. Most of the walking routes are trackless (grass) or on rough paths. Gradients are generally easy, however on some days the start of the walks are a bit steeper. All said you can be sure that your experienced NWF walking leader will get the very best out of the group and trip! |

On the June departure you can fly direct from London Stansted to the Faroes with Atlantic Airways. In August the only way to fly to the Faroes is via Copenhagen.
Clients who live in Scotland (or northern England) and are interested in the June departure have to make a choice between travelling to London and flying via Copenhagen.
